The Debate and Public Speaking Society of Accra Technical University (ATU) has once again elevated the university’s reputation on the international stage, making a remarkable impact at the Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) in Uganda on December 16, 2024.
ATU’s team delivered an outstanding performance, securing multiple awards and setting records that will be etched in the championship’s history. From the outset, they proved they weren’t just participants but serious contenders, winning medals across all categories and demonstrating exceptional debating prowess.
The team’s achievements include:
- 1st and 2nd Best Public Speaking Adjudication Runner-up in Africa
- 3rd Best Public Speaker in Africa and Runner-up
- Best Public Speaking Judge in Africa
- Three of the Top 3 Public Speaking Judges in Africa
Their success was historic. Of the five ATU representatives, four secured at least one award. ATU also became the only university to reach the Public Speaking African finals for two consecutive years, a remarkable feat in the PAUDC’s history. Additionally, the university set a new record for producing Africa’s top three judges; all from ATU. They also broke the record for the most appearances by a Ghanaian team in a top-room debate.
With these accomplishments, Accra Technical University emerged as the best-performing technical university in Ghana and Africa—a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of its debate and public speaking team.
The Pan-African Universities Debate Championship remains Africa’s premier debate competition, fostering intellectual exchange, critical thinking, and discourse on pressing global and continental issues. The 2024 edition, hosted in Uganda; the “Pearl of Africa”; offered not only an intense competitive atmosphere but also a cultural and scenic adventure for participants.
